He handled the following: Senna tried to regain control of the car by decelerating and throttle down to 50% (score 2). He only cut it by 50% to avoid a sudden drop causing loss of control in a sensitive vehicle like the F1. And that was the beginning of a tragedy. At that time the FW16 was completely out of Senna’s control. It is unbelievable that he discovered the problem after only 0.2 seconds and promptly took measures to handle it urgently. He released all the gas (score 3), tried to brake as hard as possible and hit the steering wheel to change the direction of the car and not hit the retaining wall directly. But then, he understood that he could not avoid crashing into the concrete wall at the corner of Tamburello.
Despite being quick and experienced, Senna’s efforts yielded no results. Data from the FW16’s black box showed a problem with the steering wheel. The parameters of the force acting on the steering wheel show that the impact of Senna was then very small (score 4, green line). This means that it is meaningless to try to change the direction of the vehicle when the force of the impact is not transmitted to the front wheel. In addition, the hydraulic pressure of the steering wheel (dark green line) suddenly increases and then falls back down to normal level (score 5). This suggests a deadly steering wheel malfunction.
