Flipflopi, the world’s first traditional sailing boat made entirely from recycled plastic, has completed its historic 500km voyage from the Kenyan island of Lamu to the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar.|Plastic pollution destroys marine life|Don’t underestimate the prospect of “plastic pollution”|The voyage of this special sailboat aims to raise people’s awareness of the current burning environmental problem: plastic pollution.|Flipflopi is a joint project of the United Nations Environment Agency (UNEP) and Kenyan tourism operator Ben Morison, implemented since 2016.|The sailboat is made entirely from Flipflopi recycled plastic.|To complete this sad boat, Ali Skanda – a talented craftsman from Lamu Island, together with a group of volunteers used up to 10,000 tons of recycled plastic. In addition, the name of the boat is also inspired by the 30,000 pairs of flip-flops that are reused to decorate, giving the hull vibrant colors.
