In mid-July 2014, a survey team of the Chengdu Insect Museum, China, discovered a species of aquatic insect in the world’s largest dragonfly family in Sichuan province.
With wings that span up to 21cm, this insect is considered the largest and most coarse in the world. Scientists are also very surprised to discover this “giant” dragonfly species in the world because this species has never been known before.
The world’s largest dragonfly has broken the record of a species previously discovered in Central South America called the Helicopter Dragon with a wingspan of 19.1cm.
Previously, history recorded one of the largest dragonflies with a wingspan of 75cm, but this species was extinct more than 250 million years ago.
