Charles Martel, nicknamed Charles the Hammer (hammer), was a military and political leader of the Frankish kingdom, who held the post of prime minister (Mayor of the Palace literally means – Commander of Power – but in fact the largest office in the king’s palace -> temporarily translated as Prime Minister under the Merovingian king, he was the de facto ruler in the period of 737 to the end of his life, with the titles of Duke and Prince of the Frank Kingdom.
