In 1324, Charles IV of France and Edward II of England and his brother-in-law fought each other in a short battle of Saint-Sardos in Gascony. The British army was commanded by Edmund of Woodstock, the Earl of Kent was forced to surrender after a month of being bombarded by French army guns after he saw no reinforcements. The war was a complete failure for British troops and only Bordeaux and a coastal strip of the Duke of Aquitaine remained in English hands.
