The Final Frontier, the band’s 15th album, is astonishing. Still fast tempo and fantastic solo play, but songs like The Talisman have folk music; Isle Of Avalon is a 9-minute epic. The theme in the album is repetitive, but each song is separate. “We recorded a lot of songs and then picked out the ones that were supposed to be the best,” Dickinson said.
Some Iron Maiden’s songs like The Number Of The Beast have been criticized for their use of creepy images. Dickinson explains that the band is partially influenced by the tradition of British horror. “We grow up with horror movies, but in Iron Maiden’s concert there is never a violent atmosphere, everyone is focused on music.”
The tour also gives Dickinson the opportunity to dream of flying in the air. He drove a Boeing 757 that took the band from city to city. Two years ago, Dickinson flew to the rescue of hundreds of tourists stranded in Sharm-el-Sheikh and Kos after their tour operators went bankrupt. When he was thanked, he simply said, “I just do my job”.
